HLTAID003 Provide First Aid



This nationally recognised course is for all workers who may be required to provide a first aid response in a range of situations, including community and workplace.There are no pre-requisites for this course except for the candidate’s capacity to apply oral communication skills to effectively make an accurate verbal report to emergency response services and workplace supervisor.

Participants will need to participate in physical tasks and will be required to kneel on the floor to allow assessment as stipulated by the Australian Resuscitation Council (ARC). Participants will need to wear appropriate attire to allow movement on the floor.

HLTAID001 Provide cardiopulmonary resuscitation is also a component of this course and utilizes training with adult and infant manikins as per Australian Resuscitation Council (ARC) guidelines.

This competency satisfies employer obligations for the ‘WorkSafe Compliance Code - First Aid in the Workplace’ including “having appropriate first aid measures in place, including first aid kits and suitably trained first aid officers”.

Entry Requirements

Whilst there are no pre-requisites for this course, please be aware that in order to make an accurate verbal report to the supervisor and the emergency response services as well as provide written incident reports, adequate language skills are required and assessed.

Validity & Duration

Length of Validity

The Australian Resuscitation Council (ARC) recommends this course to be renewed every 3 years from the date of issue. However, the Australian Resuscitation Council (ARC) also stipulates that to maintain this level of competency that you are required to update the Provide CPR (HLTAID001) component of the course on an annual basis.

Course Duration

All Health Training has tailored delivery options to meet your individual and specific workplace needs. All Health Training has developed a four (4) hour training workshop for delivery of the course and can be delivered in your workplace by arrangement. Delivery is contextualised according to your industry setting. Preferred class size is 10 persons with a maximum of 12 persons per workshop.

The HLTAID003 Provide First Aid workshop consists of a practical assessment class, where First Aid skills and knowledge are assessed. Prior to the workshop attendance, participants will be provided with pre-learning resource materials which must be completed, submitted and assessed as ‘satisfactory’ prior to attendance at the practical workshop class. (Approx.10-14 hour’s pre reading). This will enable effective participation in the practical assessment class.


Workshop Delivery & Assessment: 


Pre-assessment:          Prior to the classroom attendance, participants will be required to complete a pre-assessment. This will be submitted prior to your classroom session and assessed as “Satisfactory”. Approximately, 10 – 14 hours of pre reading and assessment time is required.


Classroom:                  4 hours (Maximum class size of 12 persons per workshop)

You will gain a Working Knowledge of:

  • conducting a hazard assessment and identifying strategies to minimise risk demonstrating safe manual handling techniques
  • assessing airway, breathing and responsiveness of casualty
  • performing at least four minutes of uninterrupted CPR on both an infant resuscitation manikin and an adult resuscitation manikin placed on the floor, demonstrating the learned techniques
  • following the prompts of an Automated External Defibrillator (AED)
  • conducting a verbal secondary survey
    • applying first aid procedures for the following:
    • allergic reactions
    • anaphylaxis
    • asthma
    • basic wound care
    • severe bleeding
    • burns
    • cardiac arrest
    • choking and airway obstruction
    • convulsions
    • envenomation (using pressure immobilisation)
    • fractures, sprains and strains (using arm slings, roller bandages or other appropriate immobilisation techniques)
    • poisoning
    • respiratory distress
    • shock
    • stroke

On successful completion of this course, each participant will receive a statement of Attainment for the following:

  • HLTAID001 Provide Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation
  • HLTAID003 Provide First Aid

Participants will then receive a Statement of Attainment within 10 business days.
